WPIF Director-General Letter to The Times, November 2012
Wed, Nov 21, 2012
Sir,

The letter from R. Bullen (Nov 20) incorrectly concludes that there is only a limited market for UK softwoods, and that biomass is therefore an acceptable use of this wood.

UK softwoods are in demand, almost the entire harvest is used for processing into wood and paper products. The UK demands more wood products (in the form of kitchens, furniture, etc) than it can supply domestically.

Diverting wood supplies for processors to biomass energy will exacerbate this further, putting UK manufacturing companies out of business, and raising the cost of wood products for all UK consumers.
