WPIF Gives Evidence to Energy and Climate Change Committee
Tue, May 21, 2013
Alastair Kerr, Director General of the Wood Panel Industries Federation, today gave oral evidence to the Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee's Bioenergy Inquiry.

He appeared alongside Harry Huyton from the RSPB, Hamish Macleod from BSW Timber and Dr Raphael Slade from the Centre for Energy Policy, Imperial College.

Alastair highlighted the industry's concerns about current Government bioenergy policies, including the economic impact if there is a disproportionate uptake of domestic timber and the risk of displacing valuable, existing wood using industries. He also raised the issue of the disproportionate subsidy level for domestic wood which is set at the same higher rate needed to support the energy sector to meet the more expensive cost of purchasing imported wood. This gives the energy sector an unfair advantage in purchasing domestic wood.

The WPIF welcomed this opportunity to appear before the Committee and looks forward to seeing its conclusions following the completion of the inquiry.
